My First Greenfield Post

One of the books I am looking at is William G McLoughlin’s REVIVALS, AWAKENINGS AND REFORM. McLoughlin was a professor at Brown Univ and member, I believe, at First Unitarian in Providence.

For us looking at the history of past ‘emergences,’ with an emphasize on Transcendentalism, his books combines several strengths. He sets the history of the several great awakenings in America, not so much in intellectual history, but in broader cultural and social change. He uses the model developed by the anthropologist Anthony F. C. Wallace of awakenings as revitalization movements. This model suggest a closer look at technological innovations, such as improved printing as part of the ‘1st great awakening’ with George Whitefield.
