Guns, not butter!

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.  This world in arms is not spending money alone.  It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.  This is not a way of life….  Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”

–Dwight Eisenhower, American Society of Newspaper Editors, 16 April 1953

The quote from Eisenhower I’ve cut from an article in COUNTERPUNCH on the ‘Untouchable Budget.’

A similar note is sounded by Ryan Grim in an article in HuffingtonPost. Grim points out that whenever health reform is written about in the press, we read about fiscal crisis, deficit, etc.  I would add  any time any domestic economic issue comes up, that’s what we read about.  However, the military gets a blank check with no dread of fiscal crisis.

What are we defending with our world class military?  Our public schools?  our pot-holed roads and bridges?  our heath insurance companies? our creditors? China?
