USS Guardian Aground in the Sulu Sea

January 17, the Avenger-class ship had just completed a port call in Subic Bay, Olongapo City and was en route to her next port of call when the grounding occurred. One of the most finely-tuned and sophisticated pieces of technology in the US Navy, designed to hunt down and destroy even the best-hidden of enemy sea mines , she grounded in a Southeast Asia’s Coral Triangle, a World Heritage site.  The Reef contains most of world’s coral, reefs, and more than 3,000 fish species.

The Guardian is a far cry from the ancient vintas which plied these waters.
