GENEALOGY

Christopher Batt, Senior

Dec 1st and 2nd son Will and I went into Boston for genealogical research. Dec. 2nd we went first to the Middlesex County Courthouse, Cambridge, where we photocopied the deed for William Batt, of Watertown, MA, buying land in ‘Souhegan West,’ now Amherst, NH,  from his brother-in-law, Samuel Lamson, Jr., of Reading, Ma.

Then we took the ‘T’ to Park Street and walked to Washington Street.  We  toured the Old South Church, which the family were original members of in 1669.  As the Historical Catalog of the Old South Church says, Christopher and Anne owned land across Washinton Street from the Church. The first minister was Thomas Thacher.  Thacher’s mother was Alice Batt, sister of Christopher Batt.

Old South Church on Washington Street is very beautiful inside.  We compared it with Trinity Church in Newport, RI. which was built in 1726.  Old South was built in 1729.  We talked about the Old South sanctuary being much squarer than Trinity’s.

On Dec. 1st we went to the Mass Archives.

There we photocopied a number of Probate documents, including Sarah (Tedman) Batt’s administration and guardianship for Timothy Batt [3] (1708-1755).

We found some good places to eat, too.

As a descendant of William Batt and Mehitable Warren, I was interested to see your posting that lists his ancestry. I would be interested in knowing how you determined who his parents were.

My great great aunt Charlotte Newell is listed in census of Santa Barbara, CA 1900 as adopted mother of John Channing b. 1887 who appears to be brother of George Thatcher Channing, both sons of Giovanni Eugene Channing. why in the world did Florence and Eugene leave their son with Charlotte. She was a mean old woman according to her neice. I descend from Charlottes neice Mary Ann Soper Cooper who came to CA in 1907 from London, England and died 1913. Do you know the story

There are a lot of records indicating that Peter Thacher’s many children (some famous) were from his first wife – Anne Allwood, rather than your ancestor Alice Batt. I mean no disrespect.
